Part One
Izzy was lying on her back on her bed, staring at the ceiling. She looked over to her bedside table and picked up a frame holding a picture of herself and Felix. It was an ordinary picture; Felix was leaning against the trunk of a tall tree, his arms circled around her slender waist. Her head was leaning on his chest and she looked towards the camera with a simple, contented smile. They looked like the perfect couple. But that was just the problem! They only LOOKED the part! She picked up her portable phone. Maybe she should just call him. No! He was the one that took off on her last night! Why should she be the one to call him? Felix too, had phone in hand. "Call her you idiot," he told himself. He began to dial her number, but hung up before he had pressed all the digits. It was always so frustrating to talk to Izzy after a fight! Especially when he knew he was in the wrong. It was a lose-lose situation for him: if he conceded, she raked him over the coals; if he refused to admit his guilt, she would stop talking to him. Maybe they should just forget about each other…maybe that would just be easier. He closed his eyes and saw her face. No, he loved her, and no matter what, he would do everything he could to make sure she always knew that. He picked up the phone again and dialed her number. The phone rang. Izzy jumped. Was it Felix? She composed herself and coolly picked up the phone. "Hello?"Felix lost his nerve and hung up again before he’d said anything. Then he cursed at himself."Christ! This is stupid." He got up and walked out of his dorm room and started the two block walk to Izzy’s apartment.Felix and Izzy were attending the University of Prince Edward Island and were loving their experiences in higher education. Felix, in his second year, was earning his degree in Business and Hotel Management and Izzy in Fashion and Interior Design. He lived in the student housing building on campus, but Izzy had decided to rent her own apartment rather that live in Residence.Felix knocked on her door. He heard her footsteps as she came closer and listened as she pressed herself up against the door to look through the peep-hole. There was a pause. Then she opened the door."Hi," she said."Hi." They just stood there, not knowing what to say."Can I come in?" he asked. She didn’t answer, but stepped aside, allowing him to enter her apartment. Felix reached out and tried to run his fingers through her wavy chestnut locks. She leaned away."No," she whispered and ignoring the hurt look on Felix’s face she continued. "No, Felix. Please don’t. I know that if I let you touch me and kiss me and tell me you love me then I’m going to fall apart and just…forgive you. But don’t you think we owe it to ourselves to talk this through? Please Felix?" He knew she was right. He knew that to touch her and kiss her was unfair. Her touch and her kiss did the same things to him and his did to her."You’re right.""It just always seems to me that we’re high one second and low the next! One minute I’m so in love with you I don’t know what to do with myself and I don’t want you to ever stop kissing me; and the next minute I’m so mad at you, or you’re so mad and me, and I’m convinced it’s over! And we can’t just keep kissing things away!""You’re right.""But I love you and I want this to work! We’ve just got to stop being so petty! This ISN’T just a silly high-school romance anymore. I want to BE with you. We need to work on putting little, stupid things aside because we LOVE each other!""You’re right." Izzy laughed and relieved some of the tension in the room."Don’t you have anything else to say other than ‘You’re right’?" she asked him."No," he told her frankly. "I agree with everything you’ve said. You’re always right…I should know that by now!" There was a pause. "Does this mean we’ve made up?" Izzy nodded."I think so." She walked over to him and wrapped her arms around his neck before she kissed him softly. He let his hands fall lightly on the curves of her hips as he pulled her closer and kissed her back. They barely heard the creak of the door as Izzy’s room-mate Megan walked in."Oh…God, guys sorry!" she said starting to leave. Izzy pulled away from Felix."Hey Meg! No…no don’t go. It’s okay." Megan smiled at them."So…I’m guessing that you two made up…AGAIN!" "Yeah.""All right, so which one of you caved this time?" she asked as she picked up a dry-erase pen and walked over to the white board on which she kept the ‘score’ of Izzy and Felix’s relationship. There were two charts; one for who started the fight and another for who ‘caved’ (as Megan herself put it) and ended it. Felix was winning both by an overwhelming majority. "And another point for Felix King!" she cried out. "You know Felix, we really ought to get you an award!""Funny Megan," Felix said sarcastically."Aw. Felix…" Izzy cooed. "You know that Meg’s only joking!" Felix smiled at Megan – she wasn’t his favorite of Izzy’s friends, that was for sure, but he knew that her intentions weren’t bad. He turned to Izzy."Iz, Mom invited us for dinner tonight at the house. Do you wanna go?""Sure what time does she want us there?" Felix looked at the clock."In about fifteen minutes!" Izzy laughed."There’s no way we can make it into Avonlea in fifteen minutes. You’d better call her. I’m gonna go and get changed." Izzy disappeared into her bedroom and Felix sat down at the desk and picked up the phone. On the other end, Cecily answered."Hey Cess.""Hey Felix.""Is Mom there?""Yeah, but she’s kinda busy. Can I give her a message?""Sure. Um…Iz and I are going to be a little late.""Where are you now?" Cecily asked."At Izzy’s.""Oh!" Cecily laughed. "Okay, we’ll wait for you.""Thanks Cess."" ‘Welcome! See ya!""Bye." He hung up and walked over to knock on Izzy’s door."Yeah?" came her voice."Can I come in?""Hold on…okay!" Felix opened the door and smiled at her. Her back was turned to him, as she put on a pair of earrings. She had changed into a pair of blue jeans and white tank top. She’d brushed her long hair and it hung down her back in shiny gentle brown waves. He couldn’t believe how beautiful she was. Between the waist of her jeans and beginning of the top lay a tempting strip of bare skin. He walked over and let his hands trace it to her exposed naval. She turned about in his arms to face him and gave him a half-smile. "What are you doing?" His thumb lightly caressed her cheek and she looked down as her lips parted in a wide smile. "We have to get going…" she reminded him."I know," he whispered. He began to leave a stream of kissed down her neck. She closed her eyes. "We have to go…" she said, only somewhat insistently. His kisses became more furious and in a moment of impulse, he picked her up in his arms and swung her around, holding her close. In the other room, Megan heard Izzy’s laughter and wondered what was going on. As the day approached evening, Cecily sat horseback in the outdoor riding ring at the farm, thinking of the events of an afternoon, not so long ago, when the world of Avonlea had changed for her forever. Cecily knew she should be practicing but she couldn’t help slipping into a little daydream…**Cecily had rolled up the legs of her jeans and stepped into the ocean. The water was cold and sent chills up the pretty young woman’s spine. Cecily loved the ocean, loved shedding her shoes and dipping her feet in it, and couldn’t resist it, even in it’s wintry November form. From behind her, she had heard someone calling her name. She looked back and saw Peter Craig. perched on top of a sand dune waving at her. Peter had left Avonlea quite a few years before when he had stopped doing Hetty King’s yard work and had gone to live with his mother. Then, on the first day of school, as she was beginning eleventh grade, Cecily had spotted him walking aimlessly down the hall of the Senior High School. They became fast friends again, and quite quickly, Peter had asked Cecily on a date. Of course, she had accepted and since then, they had been quite inseparable. "Peter!" she called, her feet still bathing in the salt water. "What are you doing out here?" "I came to find you," Peter had replied. He had walked down to the beach to meet her and they walked the shored together for a long while. That afternoon had been the first time that Peter had told Cecily that he loved her.** Even as she sat outside perch in her old comfortable saddle, she could hear Peter’s shaky voice in her ears trying to choke out the words ‘I love you.’ She smiled. She loved Peter too. Now, trying to concentrate on her riding was a bit of a lost cause. But she was lucky to have this time – Felix and Izzy’s tardiness worked in her favor: it allowed her at least another half and hour of practice before it got dark. So she put Peter out of her mind and set to work. Cecily couldn’t imagine her life without riding. She loved it. She was never happier than when she was seated firmly in the saddle, sailing over the tall jumps, counting the strides of her beloved horse, "Prince Napoleon Sinclair Xavier Zephaniah" otherwise known as Zephyr or Zephy.. For the first few years of her life, riding had simply been a leisurely after school activity. But when she reached the age of about thirteen, she fell deeply in love with it, and insisted that her parents allow her to take riding lessons. They did, and she was declared by her coach, a ‘natural’. After a few years of lessons, Cecily’s ambitions intensified – she wanted to be a jumper. Her instructor talked her parents into hiring a private coach for Cecily and they worked two hours every afternoon on Cecily’s jumping technique. When her coach, Victoria, left her, Cecily would spend the hours before dinner and anytime afterwards that still held day light riding, and going over the things she had learned in her lessons. In her senior year in high school, Cecily was now looking towards going to a profession riding institution and hoping for scholarships, as well as possibly qualifying for the Canadian Olympic Team. It frightened her a little to be thinking of herself as an Olympic contender, but Cecily knew that if she tried hard enough and practiced long enough, she could and WOULD make it as a rider.Somehow or other, Felix and Izzy had made it to dinner on time. Felix didn’t even bother knocking as they approached the house. King Farm was still King Farm – Felix imagined that it looked much the same now as it had a hundred years ago when Avonlea had been young. "Hello!" Felix called loudly. "We’re here!""Felix! Izzy! I’m glad you two could spare the time from your busy college schedules to come and visit your lowly family members," joked Alec, a little breathless after just returning from a jog."Oh! You two finally made it did you?" Janet asked good-naturedly as she stepped into the dining room, her arms filled with numerous place settings. Felix eyed the tower of plates suspiciously. "Mom, who else do you have coming to dinner tonight?" he asked."Well," she replied once she had put the dishes on the table, kissed her son, and hugged Izzy, "just about everyone. Aunt Hetty is coming. Sara’s not, as you know she’s still back-packing around Europe. Aunt Olivia, Uncle Jasper and the gang will be here. Gus and Felicity and little Julianne. You two of course. Daniel’s over at a friends for dinner. Oh! And I believe Peter Craig will be joining us too."Izzy and Felix looked at each other."Peter?" Felix asked. "He and Cecily are still together? Wow, they’ve held on longer than I’d have given them credit for.""They’re quite serious now," Janet said, a little weary. "But you know Cecily. She’s married to her horse – I don’t think we have to worry too much about her romantic endeavors.""Thank God for that!" Alec cried with a little laugh."Where is Cecily," Izzy asked, wanting to see her best friend again."Outside in the ring!" Janet told her."Where else?" commented Felix."Felix, will you and Izzy go and tell her that dinner is ready? If we tell her to come in now, she should be in by the time the rest of the gang gets here in about fifteen minutes." Felix laughed."Cecily is the most predictable person I know!" he exclaimed, taking Izzy’s hand as they went outside to get Cecily. They watched her soar over a few jumps before interrupting her."Lookin’ good there Cess!" Felix told her."Hi!" Cecily called out, dismounting and running to excitedly greet her brother and her best friend."Hi Felix!" she said, passing him. "Izzy! She cried out! Oh, Iz! I’ve missed you so much! How’s school, how’s living on your own, how’s…LIFE?" she asked. It had been two months since Izzy had moved away from Avonlea and Cecily missed her terribly. Felix laughed at the two girls."What is this? I get a simple ‘Hi Felix’ and Izzy is greeted by all kinds of glorious fanfare? I missed you too Cecily," he said sarcastically, winking at his sister."Ok, Ok…I missed YOU Felix, I admit it. So anyways, Izzy…!" she said deliberately. Together, the laughing threesome made their way to the house."Felix! We’re so happy to see you! Izzy, how are you dear?" Olivia asked kindly."We’re good, Olivia, thank you," Izzy answered for them. Soon, the large, noisy family sat down at the dinner table. Janet had prepared a fabulous fall feast; ham, mashed potatoes, biscuits, Caesar salad and fresh apple dumplings. "So Felix, how are your c-c-courses going?" Jasper asked him."They’re great Uncle Jasper. I’m learning a lot! When I get out I’m going to buy myself a hotel!""What about you Izzy?""I’m really enjoying myself. But there so much to get used to – it’s still a little overwhelming…""You’ll both to just fine," Hetty declared. Felix looked at Izzy and winked."Tell us about your riding, Cecily," was the next plea. "How is it going?" Cecily lit up – she loved to talk about riding."It’s totally intense," she told them all. "I’m working really really hard, which is difficult with my schoolwork and everything, but it’s all good. Within the next week I should know whether I qualified to qualify for the Olympic team. I’m really nervous!" "The Olympic team! I didn’t know it had gone that far!" Hetty exclaimed."Cecily will be a championship rider yet," Alec said with a proud smile at his youngest daughter."Cecily," Felicity asked. "Will you have to leave home for the qualifying rounds for the Olympics?" Cecily looked regretful."Yeah," she told them, sad at the prospect. "The qualifying rounds are being held at Spruce Meadows in Alberta – you remember, I was there last year competing. And if I make it…I’ll have probably have to stay there to train and everything…it’ll probably be a year." With this, Cecily looked quickly to her parents. This was new news to them – she’d been avoiding this particular piece of information."A YEAR!?" was the general outcry of alarm,Cecily looked to the young man beside her, who’s face was a little too pale."Peter?" she whispered. "Are you all right…I know this was a shock but…" Peter stopped her by putting his arm out to her."We’ll talk later," he said in a tone of complete disbelief. "Cecily!" Felicity cried out. "You do realize how long a whole year is, right? You’d actually leave Avonlea for a year?" "Well…I…" "Cecily must do what Cecily must do," Hetty told them. "If you need to go, my girl, do it! Without worrying about what anyone else might think," she told her niece. "Thank you Aunt Hetty," Cecily said, glad to know she had her aunt on her side. "Father? Mother? Are you…are you okay?" she asked cautiously. They both looked stunned. "Cecily, we knew you were going for the Olympic team, dear, but do you have to train in ALBERTA? Couldn’t you just as soon train somewhere here on Prince Edwards Island? Or at least, in Easter Canada?" Janet said. "Mother, I REALLY need to be right there, in the whole culture to train properly and…oh! What are we talking about this for? I haven’t even made the team yet – and I probably won’t! So can we please drop it?" she added moodily. She hadn’t really expected this kind of reaction. Why couldn’t her family just be happy for her? The rest of the evening was a bit of a bust. No one spoke above a whisper, and few made actually eye contact with Cecily. Eventually, people started to leave. Peter turned to Cecily and whispered, "I’d better go Cess. I’ll um…I’ll see you tomorrow I guess." He got up without kiss or squeeze of the hand. Cecily got up after him and followed him out to his car. "Peter, that’s not fair!" she told him. He fit the key in the lock. "What isn’t fair?" "The way you’re acting." He opened the door. "I don’t know how else to act Cess." "Would you please tell me what’s going on with you?" His hand remained on the door handle. "Nothing’s wrong." He turned to face her and allowed his hand to caress her face. "It’s just…I don’t know. I AM happy for you Cecily – you know how much I want your dreams to come true for you – it’s just going to take a little time to get used to, all right?" Cecily nodded. "All right. As long as y’know, you’re not mad at me…" "I’m not mad." And to show her that, he kissed her long and soft. She sighed. "Okay. Goodnight." "Love you Cess." "Love you too." She watched him as he drove out of the driveway and around a corned. She dreaded going back into the house – no doubt they would all want to talk. She dragged herself into the house and found her parents sitting in the family room. Felix and Izzy were in the foyer, getting ready to go. "Bye Cess," Izzy said, with a hug. "Bye Iz." "See you sis," Felix said with a smile. "Bye Felix." She glanced into the family room and winced. "Good luck," Felix told her quietly before he ushered Izzy out of the house. "See you guys!" he called loudly before he shut the door behind him. "Well…that was…interesting," Izzy started as they waked out to the car. "Yeah. You can say that again." "Do you really think Cecily will go?" "Come on, we’re talking about CECILY here. She’d do anything to ride." "Peter looked pretty upset." "Can you blame the guy? I mean, if you suddenly announced that you were going to the other side of the country, I know how I’d feel." "I guess." "Ah, I hope everything works out for her. She works really hard…" "She deserves to make the Olympic team." Felix sighed. "I’m sure it will all work out," he said as they got into the vehicle. He started the ignition and they drove away from the house. They were quiet, but as he drove, he reached over and took her hand. Inside the King household, it was also quiet. The rest of the family had gone, Daniel had been sent to bed, and now it was just Alec, Janet, and Cecily sitting alone in the family room. "Would one of you please say something?" Janet and Alec looked at each other. "We trust you. We know you’ll do what’s right for you and we’ll be behind you no matter what," her father told her before he and her mother left the room. Cecily sighed with relief. And so it came to be that Cecily prepared to go to Alberta. It had been hard to leave, for there was so much in Avonlea to keep her there. She loved her family, her friends; she loved the land and the sea. It was all a part of her and she vowed to herself that she would be back, that no matter what happened along the way, she would live her life here. The entire family drove with her to the airport to see her off and wish her well. Felix and Izzy had met them there. Peter had come along as well. Cecily stood in front of the terminal, tears threatening her eyes. Felix punched her playfully in the arm. "Knock em dead Cess." Izzy hugged her friend. "See you soon Cecily." Her aunts, uncles and cousins proceeded to kiss her and give her their well-wishes. They all stood back as Peter approached her. "Bye Peter," she whispered. "Good bye Cess," he whispered back. He wasn’t sure that he wanted to kiss her – not with her entire family standing right there. But he knew that if he didn’t he’d regret it once she had gone. "I love you Cecily," he told her before he kissed her. Once their lips had parted, he looked into her face. "Promise you’ll come home to me?" he whispered. "I promise." Then Peter laughed. "Now go and kick some equestrian-ass!" he joked. "Ok!" Cecily said, laughing despite the pain in her heart. Her parents were the last to bid her goodbye before she left. "Train hard Cecily, you know you can do what ever you put your mind to," her father told her. "And remember that, no matter what happens, you will always have your family here to support you, okay? No matter what." "I know mother. Thank you." "Cecily, we know you’ll do well," Alec continued, "But I want you to promise me something." "Anything, Daddy." "I want you to promise me that none of this will change you. Promise that no matter where this takes you, you’ll always remember who you are and where you came from. Because that’s more important than an Olympic gold. Promise me that if you begin to lose sight of yourself, you’ll come home?" "I promise father." She smiled at her parents. "I love you both," she told them. And then, turning to everyone before she walked onto the plane she cried, "I love you ALL! I’ll call the minute I’m in Alberta!" And then she was gone.

Part Two
Cecily walked into the barn and sighed audibly. THIS was the life! Horses, horses everywhere! She walked down a long corridor of stalls until she found the one she knew her horse was in. He had arrived in Alberta the day before and been trailered here, to the barn at Spruce Meadows. She stroked his flank lovingly. "Hey there Zephy," she cooed. He whinnied. "Oh, yes! I know! You just want to get right out there in the ring, don’t you?" "A beautiful horse you have there," came a voice from the corridor. Cecily, startled, looked up to see a very handsome man of about 25 or so, before her. "Thank you," she said smiling. As the man stood there, he didn’t think he’d ever seen anything more beautiful that this golden-curled creature. "Forgive me," he said sticking out his hand. "My name is Carl Lopenz – I’m a professional trainer." "Hello! Cecily King – I’m a contender here." "As if I couldn’t guess," he said. "You are built like a rider." "I am? I-I mean, thank you." The man laughed. "You’re welcome." "So tell me Cecily King, are you going to be practicing at all today." "Yes, right now actually." "Would you mind if I watched?" "Pardon me?" she asked, confused. "Oh! I just mean, you…well, you don’t have a trainer here in Alberta do you?" Cecily shook her head. "No, my old trainer is back on PEI." "You intend to go through these proceedings without a trainer?" "Well I….I don’t know anyone out here…it’s too late to hire a trainer now…" "Let me watch you and your horse. I just might be able to train you while you’re here." "REALLY?" Cecily asked excitedly. "Really." "Ok! Just let me get tacked up and I’ll be out in the ring – practice ring four." "All right. I’ll be waiting." As she saddled Zephyr she smiled to herself. What luck, she thought. She knew that a trainer was essential out here, but her own couldn’t come with her and she hadn’t had time to find another one…this was quite the stroke of good fortune. As Cecily rode out into the ring she crossed her fingers that this trainer would like her and take her on…It wasn’t her best ride, that was certain. She was brutally aware of the eyes of Mr. Lopenz. But it sure wasn’t her worst, and definitely still showed off her abilities. When she had done the mock course a few times she pulled back on the reins and Zephyr slowed his pace. Mr. Lopenz walked out into the ring. "Brilliant!" he declared. "Absolute magic! I haven’t seen a ride like that in awhile!" Cecily stared at him. "Are you kidding me? That was NOT my best ride…" He shook his head. "Nonsense. I wasn’t looking for a competitive ride…for a warm-up and practice…well, it was fabulous!" "Thanks," she said in a small voice, playing with Zephyr’s loose mane. "You’re welcome." He was silent for a moment. "Ms. King, I would like to offer you a place on my training roster." Cecily just about fell off her horse. "Really?" "Yes! It would be my honor to work with young talent such as yourself." Cecily was flabbergasted. "Oh! Oh wow! I – I…thank you! Thank you so much!" He laughed. "You’re very welcome! I’d like to start right away, if that’s all right with you. You’re an amazing rider, Ms. King, but there is still some work that could be done before the qualifying rounds…" "YES!" she cried. Then she composed herself. "Thank you," she said, "That would be wonderful. I have the ring for another hour right now and then why don’t I give you my ring schedule…" "Great," he said, "Let’s get to work." And they did. Cecily had worked hard on her riding before, but never so hard as this. She didn’t stop working. Her entire week before the qualifying rounds was spent horseback, literally or mentally. Any moment she wasn’t physically practicing, she went over things in her head. Stride lengths, new competition rules, and Carl’s words of encouragement and suggestions ran through her head. She dreamt about riding. She barely even had time to think about Avonlea, let alone miss it. She was having the time of her life. She couldn’t believe it when she rode out into the practice ring for the last time before competition. What a journey this had been! For a solid hour and a half, Cecily and Zephyr went over the course flawlessly while Carl Lopenz watched on. When she had finished, Cecily slowed their pace and trotted to her trainers side. "What can I say?" he asked her. "There’s nothing more I can teach you, Cecily, really." "Then I’m ready for qualifying?" she asked, dismounting. "You’re more than ready for qualifying! You’re ready to take home an Olympic medal!" Cecily blushed. "Don’t jinx me!" she joked. Then she gave him a friendly, grateful hug. Carl Lopenz held Cecily in his arms far longer than she’d anticipated. Alarmed at first, Cecily relaxed and realized that she enjoyed being this close to him. "You really think I’ll be okay tomorrow?" she asked him, still in his embrace. He pulled back and looked into her face. "You’re perfect," he told her, almost whispering. He was leaning towards her again when Zephyr whinnied. Cecily laughed. "Oh! You’re perfect too Zephy!" she told him. "I’d better untack him and get him cleaned up…we want him to look his best for tomorrow!" "We sure do," he said, a little half-heartedly. "So, you’ll be in the stands tomorrow, right?" she asked him. "Of course I will." "Great. Then, see you tomorrow!" "I’ll be waiting for you in the winner’s circle!" he told her! She laughed, glad his faith in her was so strong. "See you there!" The day went by in what seemed to Cecily to be no time at all. It was the best day of her life. She rode well and she knew it…it was a fabulous feeling. But though she was sure of her performance, she wasn’t sure that she’d placed, let alone qualified. There were so many talented people here. All the riders had gone, and now all there was to do was wait. And wait. And wait, until they released the placement lists. When Cecily was actually reading the finally released list, she couldn’t believe her eyes. She placed third! Third! Out of all the other riders! She had qualified for the Canadian Olympic team! "Yes!" she cried out. "Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES! Oh! I can’t BELIEVE it!" After screaming and jumping around and hugging her horse, Cecily calmed down. Carl came up behind her. "Well, Miss Top Three, how does it feel to be one of the best riders in the country?" Once again, Cecily lost her composure and started the scream again. "This is AMAZING!! I didn’t actually ever think I’d really make it! THIRD!" Carl laughed. "Yes, third! And you’re being called out to the ring." Cecily led Zephyr out into the ring and enjoyed the closing ceremonies. Grinning and flushed, she met Carl outside the ring. "I have to call home! They’ll all…they won’t be able to believe it!" "You go ahead to the Hotel and call home….I’ll untack your horse for you, and I’ll meet you in your room, okay?" "Okay! Thank you SO MUCH, Carl!" He smiled at her. "You’re welcome." Cecily ran back to the hotel and jumped across the bed to reach the phone that sat on the bedside table. Quickly, she dialed home. Daniel picked up. "Hello?" "Daniel? It’s me. Quick, put Mom or Dad on the phone, will you. Hurry!" "MOM! DAD! It’s CECILY!" Daniel called. Janet picked up the telephone in their bedroom. "You can hang up please Daniel," she called down the stairs. "Hello, dear! How are you?" "Mother! I have NEVER been better in my WHOLE LIFE! Are you ready for this? You now have a daughter that will be competing in the OLYMPIC GAMES!!!" Janet and Cecily chatted excitedly for a little longer, until there was a knock on Cecily’s door. "All right Mom…I’ve got to run. That’s probably my trainer. Give everyone a kiss for me? Okay….love you too! Bye!" Cecily quickly hung up the telephone and went to answer the door." Carl!" He held out a bouquet of flowers to her and she laughed. "Thank you!" "No, thank YOU, Cecily," he told her. "You amaze me! Just a kid from PEI…but the most fabulous rider, and the most beautiful young woman I’ve ever come across…" Cecily looked down. "I’d like to take the championship rider to dinner tonight, if she’ll let me," he continued. "I’d love that," she told him. .Then she looked down at herself, still in her uniform. "But I can’t go looking like this! I’ll give you a call when I’m ready," she told him with a smile. They exchanged a brief but significant look before Carl nodded slightly and shut the door behind him. A strange feeling in the pit of her stomach, Cecily showered and put on her fuzzy, comfortable bath robe. Sifting through her luggage, she found the piece of her wardrobe she had brought with her just in case. It was a light, calf-length sun dress. Knowing it would be chilly, she grabbed the pretty sweater that matched. She hung her outfit up on the back on the door and turned her attention to her hair and makeup. She didn’t know why she was going to such trouble…she was just going to dinner with her trainer to celebrate her placement. She only ever bothered with her looks this much when she was going out with Peter. Cecily closed her eyes as her head suddenly began to swim. Peter. She hadn’t given a single thought to him in so long. Well, she would call him tomorrow. For now, she put him out of her mind and continued getting herself ready. Once she was satisfied, she put on her dress. She walked over to the bedside table and picked up the phone. She asked for the room of Carl Lopenz and smiled when he said "Hello?" "Carl? I’m ready…meet you in the lobby?" "Sure." Carl sighed nervously as he hung up the telephone after talking briefly with Cecily. He hoped that tonight would finally bring about the things he’d been thinking of constantly since he’d first laid eyes on her…He looked himself over in the mirror and silently pronounced himself fit to greet the flaxen-haired beauty he so often dreamt of. He made his way down to the lobby and looked around. She wasn’t there yet. Then he saw her. Very gracefully, Cecily walked down the main staircase of the hotel. Stopping on the bottom step, she looked around to see him. She smiled as their eyes met. "You look beautiful," he told her. He offered her his arm as he escorted her out of the hotel. As they walked casually down the street, Carl stopped suddenly. "Cecily…I – I can’t do this any more…" "Can’t do what?" He clenched his fists in frustration. "I can’t keep pretending that I don’t…" "Don’t WHAT?" Cecily asked. He sighed and turned to her. "Cecily? Would you hate me if I…" But he didn’t bother to finish his sentence. Instead, his kissed her with all the energy he’d been feeling towards her but was unable to let go of. At first, Cecily kissed him back. Then reason screamed at her, and she pulled away. "I have a boyfriend," she said, telling herself just as much as she was telling him. "And where is your boyfriend Cecily?" "He’s…not here. He’s back home on Prince Edward Island." "And I am RIGHT HERE," he told her. "And I understand you. I share your dreams…I can fulfill your dreams Cecily – haven’t I proven that already? This boyfriend of yours – " "Peter," Cecily whispered. " "Yes, Peter," he said absentmindedly. "This Peter of yours can’t possibly care about you the same way I do Cecily. I LOVE you!" "So does he…" "It’s not the same Cecily! He can’t possibly give you what I can…!" He moved to kiss her again. Cecily stepped back quickly. "No," she said. "I…I can’t deal with this right now," she told him before turning around and running back to the hotel. She collapsed on the bed, sobbing. This shouldn’t have upset her this much; why couldn’t she just shake it off, chalk it up to Carl Lopenz being slime, and move on? Why couldn’t she? Because a part of her didn’t want to, she admitted to herself. Part of her wanted Carl as much as he appeared to want her. She shook her head at herself. What was she thinking? She loved Peter. She’d always love Peter. It was just that they hadn’t been together in so long… Yes! That was it! She just needed to talk to him. She reached over to pick up the telephone and called Peter. It would be very late on PEI, but she didn’t care. She needed to talk to him. Peter, groggy from sleep, picked up the phone. "Hello?" he said gruffly. "Peter!" "Cecily!" he cried, waking and sitting up. "Cecily! It’s so good to hear your voice! Your mother called me – congratulations sweetheart! I’m so proud of you. I miss you," he told her. "I miss you too," Cecily said quietly, trying to hold back tears and steady her voice. "Peter. You do realize what my making the team means, don’t you?" "Yes, it means you’re going to the Olympics. Cecily? What’s wrong?" "It means that I’ll probably be away for a really long time and everything and…" And she rattled off every possible negativity she could think of. Peter was silent on the other end. "Peter…if you said you didn’t want me to go…I wouldn’t blame you. Honestly, can you say you’re completely, utterly happy for me." In his bedroom on PEI, Peter thought. "No…Cecily, I can’t. I love you and I want you to come home." A tear slipped down Cecily’s face. "That’s what I thought," she told him. "But I’m not coming home Peter. I’m sorry. I’m sorry you don’t share my dreams. I’m sorry. Good night Peter," she said. "Cecily…!" "Goodbye." Alone in her hotel room, Cecily dried her tears. She stood up quickly and went down the hallway, up the stairs, and down another hallway. She knocked on a door. Carl Lopenz answered. "You’re right!" she told him. "I need someone who can share my dreams. I need you." And she walked into his embrace. Carl held her for a few moments before pulling away. He brought her inside his room and shut the door. He folded her back into his arms and held her awhile longer. "Are you sure?" he asked. "I’ve loved you since you first walked into my life," she told him. "I just too scared to admit it." She pulled back so she could look into his eyes. For a moment she could hear her father’s protests at her involvement with a man who was so much older than her, and she could see her mother’s flushed face as she yelled. But as quickly as those visions passed as quickly as they had come, and Cecily cupped his face in her hand. "Carl," she said, rapturously, as though in prayer. "Carl!" she said again, laughing and smiling. He smiled back and twisted so he could place a kiss in her palm. "I’m going to make your dreams come true…you’ll be a star yet, Cecily King…you’ll be MY star." And they kissed.

Part Three
When Janet and Alec got wind of the mid-night conversation between Peter and Cecily, their parent-radar kicked in: Something wasn’t right. Though devoted to her riding, Cecily loved Peter, and they couldn’t have imagined her doing something like that to him – just ending their relationship over the telephone like that. No, something was definitely wrong. After a few telephone conversations with their daughter in which Cecily had been anything but herself (she had become crabby and harsh), they were at their wits end. "What do you think we should do?" Janet asked her husband as they sat at the kitchen table, late one evening. "I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on with her. She’s stopped doing her schoolwork through correspondence, her teachers are getting concerned…She never calls, and even when we do talk to her she’s distant…I just don’t know what’s going on." "Neither do I." "Janet," Alec said. "Cecily did promise before she left that if she lost sight of herself, she’d quit this adventure she’s on. I think she’s definitely lost herself. I think it’s time we bring her home." Janet nodded. She didn’t want to deprive her daughter of her dreams, but it was important that Cecily didn’t forsake her character, and a promise was a promise. Cecily smiled as she woke in Carl’s Vancouver home. She’d gone with him to British Columbia, so they could continue to train before official training for the Olympics began. She turned over and saw that Carl was still asleep, looking so peaceful. She allowed her hand to caress his face, and brush aside a few strands of his hair off his forehead. How she loved him! He had brought her everything she’d ever dreamed of. Occasionally, he mind flashed back to the home she had on the other side of the country and to the boy she’d left there. That’s just what he was. A boy. Incapable of the adult relationship she now shared with Carl. Carl was so mature, and he made her feel mature along with him. A ring was heard coming from another room, and Cecily recognized it as the ring of her cellular telephone. She’d had to get a cell in order to keep in touch with her family. She couldn’t give them Carl’s telephone number lest they discover that they were living together. "Hello?" she said with the usual enthusiasm towards calls from home – which was little. She’d found that these calls held her back. She didn’t want to think about missing her family – it would interrupt her training. "Mother! How are you?" "I’m all right, dear, how are you? How is your training going?" "Just fine – working hard as usual." "Well, that’s…Cecily, your father and I have come to a decision." "Oh? And what’s that?" "You’re coming home." Cecily just about choked. "I’m sorry…what?" "It’s time for you to come home." "Are you crazy! There’s only a few weeks until we start to train for the Olympics!!" "You promised us that if ever you stopped being yourself, you’d stop and come home. And you’ve been anything but yourself lately…" "MOTHER! I’ve been nothing BUT myself!! I’ve worked HARD to get where I am…this is what I WANT! You’d take that away from me? How can you question me? Did you ever stop to think that maybe you don’t know me? THIS is who I am!" "Cecily, this isn’t up for discussion. You’re coming home." "No, I’m not!" "Cecily King!" her father’s voice came over the telephone. "Father! I’m not leaving." ‘Cecily really! Look at yourself, girl! You’re touchy. You don’t care about any of us anymore. Your not paying attention to your school work, your grades are falling – you probably won’t even graduate! Remember when you left, you promised…" "To Hell with what I promised! Things change! I’m not coming home!" "You’ll do as I say. I am your father, if you haven’t forgotten." "I don’t HAVE a father," she said spitefully, hanging up in aggravation. She let out a cry of frustration. "I don’t BELIEVE it!" Carl walked in then, still half-asleep. "What’s the matter?" "My parents!" she cried. "You’re never going to guess what they just said to me." "I’m not up for games this morning Cess. What happened." "They told me to quit. That I had to go home." "What? Why?" "Because apparently, they’ve decided I’ve changed for the worse!" "Changed?" Cecily shook her head. "How can they ask me to give up? After all the work I’ve put in." "They don’t understand you like I do," Carl said, wrapping his arms around her waist. ‘That’s for damn sure." "Come on Cess. It doesn’t matter what they think. I know what you dream of, and we’re going to go out there and get it, no matter what any one else says. You only need me." "I only need you," she repeated, agreeing. "Forget family. What do they know anyway? They obviously have no idea who I am." "They don’t matter Cecily. You’re still my star." A week passed and Cecily and Carl began to prepare to go back to Alberta, where the Olympic Team would begin training. It was late into the afternoon when Cecily’s cell rang. "Cecily? It’s Felicity." Cecily was started. She hadn’t heard from her sister in a very long time. "Hello Felicity," she said coolly. Felicity was probably calling to try to ‘get through to her’. "How are you Cess?" "I’m fine." "I guess you heard from Mom and Dad." "Yes I did." "They’re right you know…about you. You’re not yourself." "Felicity, I don’t have time for this…" ‘"Would you listen to yourself? Who are you? You used to care about your family. You used to care what our parents thought…don’t you miss home?" "My home is where ever I’m riding, Felicity." "Cecily please! Think of what you’re doing! You haven’t been home in six months! You wouldn’t recognize Julianne! She’s grown so much. And you know what? She wouldn’t recognize you. Have you even talked to Felix lately? Or Izzy?" "No." "Don’t you care anymore Cecily? You used to…" "Felicity, I don’t have time to listen to your negativity. I’ve got to load my horse into his trailer for the trip to Alberta. Tare Care," she said, with a hint of sarcasm. Who did Felicity think she was? Had her parents sent her on a mission to try to guilt her into coming home? Well it wasn’t going to work. The next few months of Cecily’s life passed a little painfully. She had never worked as hard as she was now. Carl at her side, she trained with the rest of the team to be ready for the Games. Not once did she call home. She turned her cell phone off and never checked her messages. She didn’t care to hear from anyone from the place she used to call home. But she was tired. Her schedule began to take it’s toll on her. As she rode around the ring one afternoon, her heart just wasn’t in it, and nothing was going right. "Cecily! Come out of the ring!" came Carl’s voice. Cecily rode over to him. "What the hell is going on out there?" he demanded. "I’m having an off day," she told him. "We don’t have TIME for off days! The Olympics are in a mere two weeks!" "I’m sorry!" she said, taken aback that he was actually yelling at her. He’d never done that before. "I’m just not on today!" "Then you might as well just forget it! There’s no use in riding like that – it’s just going to set us back." "Carl!" "Cecily! Untack!" "Fine!" She angrily rode her horse into the barn and untacked. Carl followed her as she made their way to the apartment they were renting. "Where are you going?" he asked. "Home! Don’t follow me!" "Why not! I live there too!" "Yes you do! But you’re not coming any where near me yelling like that!" "Cecily!" He caught up with her and placed his hand gently on her neck. "Cecily, I’m sorry. This is the first time we’ve come up against this…you’ve got to be able to distinguish between Carl the trainer and Carl the man who lives with you. I leave riding at the barn. I suggest you do the same." His words made sense. "Okay," she said, submitting. "You’re right. I’m sorry." She smiled at him and kissed him gently. "So…" he said giving her a significant look. "You wanna go home? Maybe I can help you make the distinction between your trainer and your lover…" She continued to kiss him until someone called her name. "Cecily King?" "Yes?" she said, leaning away from Carl. "We got mail for you here…guess the sender doesn’t have your home address." The young man who worked at the stable walked over to her and handed her a thin envelope. "Thanks," she smiled. There wasn’t a return address. She opened it and read the very brief note. "Cecily," it read. "No one can get a hold of you on your cell and you’re not returning messages. No one had your current address either so I had to send this to the stable. Please call me – there’s something I have to tell you. Your brother, Felix." A disgruntled look came over Cecily. "Who’s it from," Carl asked. "My brother," she told him. "Don’t they get that I don’t want to talk to them?" "Guess not. What does he want?" "He wants me to call him." "Are you going to?" "Um…I might. He’s got something important to tell me apparently." They walked back to the hotel. ‘I’m really tired," she declared. "I think I’m going to take a nap." She set Felix’s letter down on the table. "Mind if I lay down with you?" She smiled. "Of course not." They went into the bedroom and Cecily lay down and closed her eyes. Carl crawled beside her and lay one hand on her stomach. He began to kiss her neck gently. "Carl…I’m trying to get some sleep…" "Come on Cess…" "Carl! Please!" He fell down on his back. "Fine." He leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Happy resting." "Are you going to stay here with me?" "If you want." Cecily inched over and lay her head on his chest. She was so glad that she had him. When she woke later that afternoon, she was reminded, much to her aggravation, of the letter Felix had sent her. She groaned, which awoke the sleeping man beside her. "What is it?" he asked. "Oh, nothing," she grumbled. "I think I’m just going to call my brother and get it over with." Carl nodded. "Don’t let him make you feel guilty," Carl told him. "Don’t let him question who you are Cecily…you’re my star." "I know." She smiled and kissed him before getting up and moving towards the telephone. Felix and Izzy were hanging around casually in his dorm room when the phone rang. "I’ll get it," Izzy offered. "Hello?" she said. "Izzy?" "Yes. Who is this?" "Cecily." "Cecily! Oh my God! Cecily! It’s been so long!" "Yes it has. Is Felix there?" Izzy wrinkled her brow at Cecily’s cross tone. "Yes he is." "Put him on the line, Izzy." Confused, Izzy handed the telephone to Felix. "Cecily?" he asked. "I got your letter Felix." "Oh." "What’s so important?" "Well…prepare yourself, Cess." "Come on Felix, what is it?" "Well…Izzy and I are getting married! Not right away of course…I mean, we’re going to wait until we’re both done school. But I proposed and she said yes!" "That’s great Felix," she said blandly. "Cess! I thought you’d be happy for us." "I am Felix…really," she said unconvincingly. "Don’t get too excited Cecily…" "Oh please Felix!" "What’s happened to you Cecily?" "God! What is with all of you! Would you stop asking me that?" "When you come up with a good answer!" "Congratulations, Felix. Give my best to your fiancée," she told him before hanging up. She turned to Carl. "Why don’t they get it?" she asked. "Isn’t it enough for them that I’m one of the best God damn riders to come out of this country? For Christ’s sake, what more do they want from me?" "You know what I want from you," Carl assured her. "And it’s enough for me. You don’t need them Cecily. You’re doing the right thing by leaving them all behind. Forget them. It’s going to affect your riding." She smiled. "Don’t worry. They don’t get to me. All I need is your confidence." The weeks trudged forward and the Olympics were upon them. Cecily rode like the amazing and talented rider she was. Cecily was ranking among the top five, and was a definite contender for the podium. But finally, it would come down to one last performance. Her ride earlier that day had not been her best. They had knocked down a board when jumping over the water hurdle. That night, the night before the last ride, Carl was in a horrible mood. "Stop grilling me!" Cecily cried as they fought in their hotel room. "I know how to ride Carl! I made it this far didn’t I?" "You made it this far because of ME Cecily! ME! I was the one who picked YOU up at Nationals; I trained YOU; I made you into a star and now you’re going to throw it all away! You’re my star and you’re going to ruin it for me if you ride like you did today tomorrow! You can’t afford those faults Cecily! Don’t throw away your dreams!" "Carl enough!" she cried. "I’m TIRED of this! I’m tired of you telling me that I’m your star! If I’m going to be a star, I’m going to be my own star! I’m tired of you taking credit for every one of my successes! I was talented before you came along and I’d still be here today if you hadn’t come along! And if I want to throw away my dreams I will – they’re MY DREAMS!!!!" "We SHARE your dreams! We share the dream of winning gold, Cecily, you know that!" "NO! No I don’t! That’s my dream! Your dream is being able to take credit for my dream! And I’m SICK of it! That’s it, Carl! You’re FIRED!" "You can’t FIRE me!" "I just did!" "You don’t know what you’re doing Cecily! You’re NOTHING without me!" "I’m still ME with out you Carl. You don’t DEFINE me!" "And who the Hell are you Cecily? You don’t even know anymore!" "I know I should never have made the mistake of falling in love with you! I should never have let you love me!" "Love you?" Car; laughed cruelly. "I love your riding Cecily. I love my star! YOU are not my star! I don’t love you!" Cecily looked up. Tears shining in her eyes. "Whatever happened to distinguishing between the trainer and the lover?" "It was all a load of…" "That’s IT! Get out! GET OUT!" she screamed! "I can’t DO THIS! I have a medal to win tomorrow…a medal to win for ME…and I can’t do it fighting with you. GET OUT!" "You’re making a mistake Cecily. You can’t win without me – you know it!" "Get out," she told him again. "And I don’t want to see you in the stands tomorrow. Goodbye Mr. Lopenz." Cecily pushed him into the hallway, shut and locked the door. She let out a cry of anguish as the tears flowed. She was so very alone now and heartbroken. She had given Carl everything; her innocence, her love, her trust, and her career. Only to find out he didn’t care about any of it. She allowed herself to cry for a few moments , then she purposefully steadied her breathing. She had to compete tomorrow and tears weren’t going to help her at all. |

Part Four
It was over. It was all over. Fourth place. For Cecily King, at that moment, there was absolutely nothing worse than coming Fourth place. Just short of the podium. And she didn’t have a single shoulder to cry on. She’d left her family behind, treated them all horribly; she’d dismissed her best friend without a thought; she’d broken the heart of the boy who loved her truly; and she’d been naïve enough to believe in a man who obviously didn’t care about her. She had no one. Alone in her hotel room, Cecily was absolutely miserable. She picked up her cell phone and turned it on for the first time in so long. She decided to sift through the numerous messages left there for her. "Cecily, It’s Mom. I just wanted to wish you good luck. We love you." "Cecily? Izzy here. I haven’t talked to you in so long! Call me when you want to." "Hi there. This is Felicity. Just wanted to say hi. I miss you." "Hello pumpkin! It’s Dad. Call home and let us know you’re okay." "Cess? It’s…this…it’s Peter. I…I just wanted to say…good luck, I’ve been watching on TV. You look good out there. Call me…if you want. I want you to know…I mean, I know it won’t make a difference but…I still love you Cecily. Are you ever coming home?" Cecily wiped away the tears that were residing on her cheeks. Those messages were all fairly recent. Maybe…Maybe they didn’t all hate her. Maybe she wasn’t so alone after all. Cecily knew what she had to do. Avonlea was peaceful, even if it’s inhabitants weren’t exactly that. It was early in the morning. Everyone was asleep. A knock was heard on the front door of the King Farm house. Alec, grumpily rose from his bed and walked down the stairs, "Do you not realize what time it is…" he started as he opened the door. He stood with his mouth open, not believing who was there on the step. "I’m home Dad. I quit. You’re right…you were always right! I just…I just lost myself so deeply I couldn’t realize it. I didn’t want to realize it. I broke my promise! Please forgive me, Daddy…I’m so alone!" She sobbed and fell into his embrace, surprised to find that nothing in her father’s arms had changed. "Cecily! Sweet, silly Cecily! You aren’t alone!" "I deserve to be alone!" she cried. "I’ve treated you all so terribly. It wasn’t until…I didn’t realize…I’m so sorry!" "Shh," he comforted. "Come on Cess. You’re home now. Please don’t cry." Alec and Cecily sat in the family room. Alec kept his arms around the daughter he thought he had lost as she cried into the shoulder of the father she’d convinced herself she didn’t love. The overabundance of emotion, the disappointment of her loss and in Carl and in herself caught up to her and Cecily fell asleep, cradled by her father. He moved slowly and gently and lay her down on the chesterfield, covering her with a blanket. There was nothing broken that could not be fixed. There wasn’t a point in going back to bed, Alec knew he wouldn’t sleep anyway. He settled himself on the staircase, so he could intercept the rest of the family before they got a chance to see that Cecily was home. Daniel was the first to rise. "Dad?" he said. "Good morning, son." "Why are you sitting on the stairs?" "Because. Come here Danny," Alec offered, patting the stair beside him. Daniel sat down beside his father. "Cecily is home." Alec told him. "But I thought she said she wasn’t coming home?" Daniel asked, confused. "I guess she changed her mind. Now listen Dan, I know that Cecily has been, well…not very nice. But I need you to be nice to her okay?" "Why?" "Because Daniel, just because. Can you do that for me?" "I guess Dad. Can I go get some cereal now?" Alec laughed a little. "Yes you can."Janet didn’t take long to rise afterwards."Alec! What are you doing sitting on the stairs?""Waiting for you.""What are earth…""She’s home Janet." The color faded from her face. "Cecily?" Alec only nodded. "Cecily is home? Where is she?" Alec stood and took his wife’s hand. He led her into the family room where Cecily was sleeping. Tears ran freely down her face as she walked towards the chesterfield and touched the blond curls of her daughter. After all the heated conversations, all the harsh words, she had still miss her little girl. Cecily was mildly aware that someone was stroking her hair and for a brief moment, she assumed it was Carl. Then all the events of the last week flooded back to her. She opened her eyes slowly to find her mother looking into her face. "Mom!" she cried out, before sitting up and throwing her arms around her mother. For the rest of her life, Cecily would remember learning the lesson that there was no where in the world safer than the arms of her parents. The two women hugged and cried and whispered apologies and forgivenesses. Alec smiled and left them alone. Janet pulled back so she could look at her daughter. Cecily had changed. There was something in her now that hadn’t been there before, or perhaps it was that there was something missing. Cecily wasn’t a child. "Mom!" she cried again. "Oh Mom, there’s so much I have to tell you. So much has changed…there’s so much you don’t know!" And then, Cecily poured her heart out to her mother. She told her everything, right from the beginning; she told her about Carl, about their relationship; she told her about her riding and the pressure; she told her about her neglections of the family and her friends and of Peter. Janet stared at Cecily as she spoke. She couldn’t believe that in the relatively short time Cecily had been gone, how much she had changed. Janet wanted to strangle Carl Lopenz for taking advantage of Cecily’s sweet, impressionable nature. She want to strangle herself for allowing sweet, impressionable Cecily to stray so far from the beaten path. How could she have not realized what was going on with her own daughter? Ho could she ignore all the signs the way she did? "I’m sorry Cecily," she told her. Cecily looked confused. "What are YOU sorry for Mom? I’m the one with the apologies to make!" "I failed you as a mother Cecily. I should never have let you go out there alone. I should have realized what might happen to you…this whole thing is my fault." "Mom, really! You’re not to blame at all. I pushed you as far away as I could…I have a lot of repairs to do around here. Everyone must hate me." "No, no, dear. No one hates you. Everyone was just really hurt when you began to act the way you did. But I know that once you explain what happened, it will all be fine. Everyone still loves you very much Cecily." "Everyone?" "Everyone." "Peter?" Janet looked into her daughter’s eyes, so full of the pain she knew she’d caused herself. "Peter never stopped loving you Cecily. Just speak to him." "Do you think he’ll still love me once he hears about everything…with Carl?" Janet bit her lower lip. "I can’t promise you that he won’t be upset Cecily. That particular piece of news is going to sting for him. But honey, he loves you! And he’ll do his best to get past the depth of your relationship with Carl." "I don’t know mother…if it was the other way around…" "All you can do is try darling." Cecily smiled at her mother. "Thanks mom." "You’re welcome. You definitely decided to come home at the right time! We’re having an engagement brunch for you brother and Izzy." "Oh! That’s right! They’re getting married!" A shadow fell over her face again and she groaned. "Oh, I was so terrible to them both." "Yes," Janet told her as they moved into the kitchen. "Your brother was quite furious with you over that. He’s cooled down now, dear, don’t worry." "And Izzy?" "Well, as you must know, Izzy was pretty upset that you just dismissed their announcement the way you did. But I’m sure she’s ready to forgive you." "What about Felicity?" "Felicity was hurt. She wanted you to be close to Julianne and as it is, the little things barely knows who you are. But that will soon be rectified, I’m sure." "I was so horrible to everyone!" "They’ll all understand…just talk to them Cecily. Give it a chance." "Okay," Cecily agreed. "How is Julianne, mother?" At the mention of grandchild, Janet beamed. "She’s so beautiful Cecily. In fact, she looks quite a bit like you did. She’s grown a lot – she’s a year old now! But she’s still very tiny for her age. You remember how small she was when you left…" "How are you feeling this morning Cecily?" her father asked, coming into the kitchen and giving her a warm hug. It was important to him to make sure she felt that they all wanted her here. "I’m all right. Better now that I’m home. Where’s Daniel? Is he still asleep?" "No, he’s in watching cartoons." Cecily laughed. "It’s good to know that some things never change." She walked into the rec. room and sat down on the couch beside her younger brother. He had grown. She mussed his hair with her palm. "Hey buddy," she greeted him. "How goes it?" "Fine," he said, absorbed in the adventures of ‘Arthur’. "How are you?" "Fine." Cecily laughed. "Missed you Daniel," she said, punching him lightly in the shoulder before going back into the kitchen. "What can I help you with, mom?" she asked. "Believe it or not…nothing! Everything is ready to go!" "Wow! I think that’s a first!" "I think it just might be!" "Cecily," her father asked. "Where’s Zephy?’ "He’s coming in today – I’ve got all his trailering organized." "That’s good. I just wondered." "When will everyone be here?" "Well," Janet began looking at the clock. "They should all be around in a little over an hour." "Would you mind if I ran upstairs and had a shower? I have to unpack as well…" "Go ahead, dear." Cecily picked up the suitcases she’d left in the hallway and took them upstairs. She unpacked, chose something to wear to brunch and then took a shower. She was glad to be home…she just wished it was under better circumstances. She had showered, dried her hair and was getting dressed when she heard her brother and her best friend downstairs. Nervously, she took a deep breath. "Here we go," she said to herself before descending down the stairs. Felix and Izzy were still in the front hallway when the spotted her. "Cecily!" Izzy cried out. "You’re home?" Cecily nodded. "Yeah." They both looked dumbfounded. "Cecily…" "Felix please wait. Before either of you say anything…I just want you to know…I’m sorry. I treated you both so horribly. There’s such a long story that goes a long with this and I promise you that you’ll get it…but please, just believe me when I say, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t myself for so long…but I’m back now and I hope you both can forgive me." Felix looked to Izzy and Izzy looked to Felix. Then Izzy turned to Cecily and cried, "Group hug!" The three of them laughed and embraced. "It’s good to have you home, Cess," Felix told her. "It’s good to be home! Oh! And…CONGRATULATIONS!!!" she cried. "I’m so excited for you two! I can’t believe it! My brother is going to marry my best friend! We’re going to sisters Izzy!" Izzy smiled. "I’m so glad you feel that way Cecily…because I’d love it if you’d be my Maid of Honor!" "Oh! Izzy! I’d LOVE to! This gets more wonderful every minute!" A knock was heard on the door then, and a moment later, Felicity, Gus, and their daughter (who had grown so much Cecily would have sworn it wasn’t the same child) walked into the front hall. Felicity nearly dropped the dish she held in her hands."Cess…Cecily?" "Hello Felicity." Coolly, Felicity looked down. "Are you here for a visit." "No, Felicity…I’m home to stay." "Really?" Felicity said, surprised. "I thought you didn’t care about any of us anymore." "Felicity! I’m sorry! I can’t even begin to apologize enough! I was terrible to you and I know that. I’m home now, and I’m asking your forgiveness." Cecily’s eyes begged her sister. Felicity set the dish down and walked over to her sister. "Of course I forgive you Cecily…you’re the only sister I’ve got." She smiled, and they hugged. "Felicity…" Cecily hugged her sister again. "Gus – " Cecily held a hand out to her brother and law and friend. "Can I hold her?" she asked after her beautiful niece. Gus looked to Felicity who nodded. He passed the little girl into Cecily’s arms. "Hello there," she whispered. "Remember me? I’m your Auntie Cecily." Tears sprung to her eyes as she thought of all the moments in this little girls young life that she had already missed. "I love you all so much," she told them. "And I know I’ve already said it to you all more than once, but I’m sorry for everything! Thank you for letting me come back home!" The rest of the King family came, and Cecily apologized to each of them in turn. She was surprised to find how easily they all forgave her – the ties of family were stronger than she had ever supposed. They were just finishing up their brunch when there was another knock on the door. Cecily looked around. Yes, the whole family was here. They weren’t missing anyone. Who could that be? "I’ll get it," she offered She went into the front foyer and opened the door. "Hello Cecily." Cecily stared wide-eyed. "Peter!" "I missed you Cecily." "Peter…we have to talk." Peter only nodded. Cecily walked into the dining room. "Um, Peter is here…" Peter, behind her gave them all a tight smile and a quick wave.. "If you all don’t mind…Peter and I really need to talk…I think we’ll go for a walk…" They received smiled from around the table, then turned and went outside. And Cecily told him everything. No holds barred, she felt that he deserved to know it all. He was silent as she talked, and when she was finished, she turned to him, waiting for a response. He started very slowly. "I won’t lie to you Cess…I can’t tell you that it doesn’t bother me…" he reached out a touched her cheek. "But it doesn’t change the way I feel about you. I’ve missed you so much." He folded her into his arms. "I’ve missed you too Peter…I just didn’t know how much. I’m sorry." "I know you are Cecily. And I forgive you. I’m just glad that you found your way back home." Cecily smiled up at him and offered him her hand. She knew that things couldn’t just go back to the way they had been – she had some rebuilding to do. But for the first time in a long time, she felt good.
