Part One
Izzy couldn’t believe that they’d come through the last two months without anything going wrong. Everyday as they went about with plans for their wedding, she expected something to go wrong. But nothing did. Everything was planned. Everything was perfect. Now, with only one week left, Izzy found herself with nothing last minute to do. She had diligently taken care of everything. It was time to relax. But she couldn’t relax. She found herself unable to sleep; she shook all the time. Being purposeless left her more stressed than she had been when she had had a million things on her mind. Felix on the other hand was walking on air. Didn’t everyone realize that in only seven days he would be married to the most wonderful girl in the entire world? He felt as though the sky should open up and God should join the angels in song! In a week, Izzy would become Mrs. Felix King, his wife – his wife, how sweet that sounded – and they would belong to each other forever. Clive Pettibone had become a basket-case. Still in Halifax with the now very pregnant Muriel, he couldn’t believe that his Izzy, his baby girl, was getting married. What was more, he couldn’t believe how happy he was for her. It had taken him a very long time to realize it, but Felix King was the right man for his daughter. He loved her with all of his heart and he would take care of her as he promised. But when it came right down to it, Clive wasn’t sure that he would be able to give her away. Muriel was in her ninth month of pregnancy and feared deeply that she would go into labor at or before the wedding. She didn’t want to ruin Izzy’s day. But babies had not been known to wait! She prayed that the child within her would rest until the festivities were over. Alec King walked around in a state of quiet contentedness. His son had finally become the man Alec had worked so hard to shape him into. He couldn’t have been prouder of his boy. And Izzy was the sweetest, most wonderful young woman they could have hoped would find Felix. She would be a loving wife and a tender mother. Janet King was also very proud of their son. She knew that he would do right by his new wife and that they would live a fairy-tale life in rural Prince Edward Island. But another part of her screamed inside. She wasn’t ready to give up her son. She had believed him dead for so long, and it felt as though he was barely home at all before the wedding preparations began. And she loved Izzy, she really did. But she just wasn’t ready – simple as that. Cecily was beside herself with excitement. To have her brother marry her very best friend was the most fabulous thing she could have thought of! Izzy was about to become her sister – a bond that would bring them even closer than they were. Cecily was to be the maid of honor and was truly touched to be standing beside Felix and Izzy on their day of days.Felicity was ecstatic. She couldn’t wait to start the deaf school and take in little Alice! After the Dean children moved away, Felicity had found things to be difficult. There had been a few, shifty foundlings in and out of the Home, but the town had decided (again!) to do away with the Foundling Home indefinitely. Feeling slightly without purpose, Felicity had been glad to give birth to her little girl and start a family of their own. But the town wanted her and Gus out of the Foundling Home and they’d been facing the difficulty of finding somewhere to live. The prospect of living in Green Gables (once called the ‘loveliest old spot on the North Shore’) and to work with young Rilla Ford, who seemed like a very pleasant young woman, excited her. And the marriage of her little brother only furthered her intense feelings of joy.Gus couldn’t help but smile. He had known that Felix and Izzy would get to this point the instant they started to show interest in one another. He knew how much they loved each other – Felix in particular having expressed his deep feelings towards the girl of his dreams to his brother-in-law. Izzy was a sweetheart and Felix, he knew, would make an excellent husband. They would care for each other well. Gus couldn’t have been happier for either of them.Daniel watched in silent wonder at all the preparations. He was getting to be quite the lad, and looked up to Felix a lot. He adored Izzy whom he had come to know as another sister. But he wondered strangely at their attraction to one another. He couldn’t help but be ‘grossed out’ when he caught even the quickest of kisses between Felix and Izzy and couldn’t imagine why they would want to get married. At the age of twelve, love still seemed a very odd and unlikable practice. The Pettibone house had undergone a good swift cleaning and rearranging in preparation for becoming the new King home. They had all spent hours working together; with only a week left to go, Clive and Muriel had come to Avonlea and were helping with getting everything ready. Felix had been putting away the money to pay for it and was extremely proud to be able to present Clive with the lump sum. But Clive turned it away. "The house would just have sat there," Clive told them. "Better that it have someone in it. Consider it our wedding gift to you." When Felix had insisted, Clive simply shook his head. "No Felix. Please, take the house. We want you and Izzy to have a good start. Take that money and put it away." And so the house passed from Muriel and Clive Pettibone’s hands into those of the soon-to-be Izzy and Felix King’s. Izzy woke up the morning of the day before their wedding with a lurch. She felt extremely ill. She got up and ran outside, feeling very much like she was going to be sick. Muriel, who had been in the kitchen at that time, ran out after her. "Izzy! Izzy dear, are you all right?" Izzy picked her head up out of a bush. "Yes…I, I think so! Oh Muriel, I feel awful!" "Are you ill? Should I get the doctor?" asked Muriel starting for the telephone. "No. No, I think I’ll be fine in a few moments. I just suddenly felt so SICK! Yes, there, it’s subsiding now. That was very strange!" Muriel looked at the young woman knowingly. "Could it have to do with the fact that you’re getting married tomorrow?" she asked, looking out of the corner of her eye as she wiped down the table. "Muriel, I’ve never been nervous about it! Not until this very morning! What’s gotten into me?" "Cold feet. It’s perfectly natural dear. Don’t fret about it…it will pass. In fact, I’m surprised you’ve held out this well up ‘till now! Why, before I married your father, I threw up for a week!" "Really?" Izzy asked. "I hope Felix isn’t getting these cold feet! Knowing him, he’s liable to not show up at the alter!" Izzy laughed, though only half-joking. "He loves you too much to do that!" Muriel assured her. But despite all the faith she had in him, she couldn’t help but wonder… Felix woke up that same morning and bounced down the stairs, a broad smile parting his lips. "What’s with you?" asked Daniel "Nothing," he said, fairly dreamily. "Felix are you all right?" Cecily asked him, looking at her brother curiously. "I’m FINE, Cecily. In fact, I’ve never once, in my entire life, been better! Don’t you all know what tomorrow is?" he asked. "Tomorrow? Yes of course! Actually Felix, I’m surprised at you! I had thought that you’d be suffering from a major case of nerves this close to the wedding!""NERVES!" he cried out. "What possible cause could there be for me to have nerves? I am about to marry the most wonderful, beautiful, amazing woman on the face of this earth! I’m too happy to leave room for nerves!" he cried out. His father came into the kitchen then and laughed. "So, I guess I don’t need to ask you how you’re feeling do I, my boy?" "Nope!" "I’m glad. I was a little bit worried you’d back out of this whole marriage business…" "Back out? Are you kidding me? I can’t even believe how excited I am. It’s nice to be so sure of something, isn’t it?" "I wonder how Izzy’s doing?" Cecily wondered aloud. "She’s probably freaking out," Felix said calmly. ‘What a change of pattern this is! I am calm and assured and IZZY is panicking! It’s very strange." "What makes you think she’s panicking?" Cecily asked. "I know her! She’ll be all nervous this morning and then she’ll get over it! And we’ll get married tomorrow and everything will be perfect!" Felix knocked his knuckles against the wood of the table, just to be safe. Rilla Ford (nee Rilla Blythe) sat on the Green Gables porch alone, letter from her husband in hand, the tell-tale trail of tears still left on her cheeks. She opened the letter again and re-read it, trying to extract every morsel of it."My darling Rilla," it read. "I hope that my letter find you well. You can’t know how much I miss you; you are always in my thoughts. This war is just as frightening as before, if not more so. But I am being careful and I will come home to you just as soon as I can. I can not wait to have you in my arms, my love. But we must all be brave, darling, from the soldiers at the front, to mothers and fathers and brides back home. We must all be brave. I love you with all my heart, Rilla-my-Rilla. Take care of yourself, darling.Love,Ken" Rilla wiped the tears off her face. This was the first she had received from Kenneth since he had left for the war and it made her miss him more than she already had. But she had work to do. She was preparing lunch for the Pikes, who had gone to get little Alice and a few other children who would be living and studying at the new deaf school. She would respond to Kenneth’s letter before she went to bed.Felicity and Gus Pike stood at the Avonlea station waiting her Alec to pick them up. Felicity held her own child in one arm while little Alice clung to her other hand. Gus had two other children by the hand, one little girl named Isabel, around eight-years-old, and a little boy, Jeremy, not more that five. Felicity called out to her father as he drove up, for she could not wave. "Father!" "Felicity! How are you my girl?’ he asked, getting out of the buggy. "I’m fine Father. Could you take the baby for me?" she asked, handing him her little girl. "Of course! Hello my darling," he said to his beloved grandchild. "All right. Well, Gus, why don’t you get in the buggy with Jeremy and Isabel. I’ll take Alice and Lucy in the back here. She picked Alice up and placed her in the back of the wagon. Then she got up herself. "Father, could you hand Lucy to me, please?" "Yes! Up you go," she said as he lifted the baby into Felicity’s waiting arms. ‘To Green Gables!" shouted Alec as they drove away from the station. When they arrived at Green Gables, Rilla had lunch all ready for them. "Hello!" she greeted them as they came in the door. She smiled at the children. For now, as she knew no sign language, she would just be in charge of the house and the kitchen. But Felicity would soon be teaching her how to sign and then she would be able to help with the children. For now though, all she could do was smile at them. "Hello Rilla!" Gus greeted her. "Hi Rilla!" called Felicity. "Oh! Wonderful! Those sandwiches look lovely! I’m starved after our little journey, and I’m sure the children are too." "Well, good, because I made lots of them!" Rilla, Felicity and Gus got the children seated around the table and gave them so sandwiches. They took a few themselves and stepped back, watching the children at the table. "So, none of them know how to sign? Not even the older one?" she asked. "Isabel knows a little…but not much. The other two I’m afraid know nothing. It’s going to be a little bit of a task, and I’ll be glad after I’ve taught you!" "So will I! I really want to help you here Felicity!" "I know you do dear. So, any word from Kenneth yet?" she asked. When she and Gus had left the day before, Rilla had been desperately worried about him. Now she sighed. "Yes. I’m glad to know he’s all right." "That’s good. I’m sure he’ll be fine," Felicity told her, trying to give the young girl some encouraging words. "I hope so," Rilla whispered. "So," she said, changing the subject, "when are you going to start teaching?" "Tomorrow. First thing in the morning. We’ll let them to a little playing after lunch and then I’m putting them all to bed – they’ve been through so much today, what with leaving their families and all. They need to get some sleep." "All right." The children ate their lunch and were send out into the yard to play. All three adults were amazed at the way they interacted with each other. Deaf or not, they were just regular children. After a couple of hours, Felicity ushered them up the stairs and into the bedroom that was waiting for them. Once they were in their nightclothes and tucked in, Felicity turned out the lights. She returned downstairs, though she felt like going right to bed as well – it had been a long day! Gus and Rilla were in the sitting room, Gus reading the Chronicle, Rilla hunched over some needle work. "I think I’m just going to go to bed," Felicity announced. "I’m exhausted. Gus, you should come too. We’ve both had quite the day!" Gus folded his paper. "Yer right, F’licity. Good night Rilla. Sorry we’re not better comp’ny!" "That’s all right! I’ve got a few things to do anyways," she told them with a smile. "Goodnight!" "Goodnight, Rilla."

Part Two
That same night, at the Pettibone house, Izzy stared at herself in her bedroom mirror. She had never thought herself good-looking, but as she peered at the reflection wearing her wedding gown, she felt beautiful. "I hope Felix likes it," she thought to herself. And then she laughed. Of course Felix would like it! She smiled at the woman in the mirror. "Hello," she said to it, "It’s very nice to meet you. I’m Mrs. Izzy King." Mrs. King. There’s wasn’t a sweeter name that existed. "Izzy," called her father, knocking on her door. "Um…yes father?" "Felix is here to see you!" "Okay! Tell him I’ll be right down. I’m getting changed." "All right." Quickly, she hung her wedding gown back in her closet. She couldn’t believe that she’d wear it tomorrow! Izzy was extremely excited. After a morning full of ‘cold feet’ and an upset stomach, Izzy had come full circle. She couldn’t wait for the next day! "Hello," she greeted him as she came down the stairs. Felix smiled at her. God, she was beautiful. And she was his. What’s more, he was hers. He wanted to take her and kiss her right then and there. But he waited. Her father was standing not three feet away. "Goodbye father!’ she called. "Goodbye Mr. Pettibone." "Goodbye," he bade them. Once the door had closed behind them, Felix took Izzy in his arms, lifted her in the air and kissed her…with gusto! She wrapped her arms around his him and pulled him deeper into the moment. After a long while Felix set her down on her feet, but still held her firmly at the waist. "Do you realize," he told her "That at this time tomorrow, you and I will be man and wife?’ He looked ready to burst with excitement. She took his hand and began to walk down the lane. "How could I forget?" she asked him. They walked in Lover’s Silence for a few moments. "Now Felix," Izzy said. "You’re not going to freak out on me and not show up at the alter tomorrow are you? No running away?" "No running away," he assured her with a kiss of her hand. "Because it’s natural to have doubts…you know, cold feet…but we need to get everything out on the table….that is, if there IS anything. So…is there?" Felix shook his head. "In fact," he told her, "I’ve never been less scared about anything in my entire life!" "Good!" "What about you? How are you feeling? Any…cold feet?" Izzy had hoped he wouldn’t ask that question! "Well, to be honest, my feet were a little chilly this morning! It’s nothing really. Just a few nerves. And more towards the actually ceremony than the part about being married. I just want everything to go perfectly." "It will…you planned it! We’ll get through the ceremony okay. But you know what I’m looking forward to?" "What?" "The honeymoon! After the ceremony is done and the goodbyes have been said and it’s just you and me and we can finally relax!" Izzy laughed "Relax! That sounds wonderful! I still have no clue where you’re carrying me off to!" she exclaimed. "Don’t worry your pretty little head about that – it’s all taken care of!" "I bet it is!" Izzy cried. "I can’t wait!" "Neither can I" Felix exclaimed, winking at her. They walked through Avonlea, discussing nothing much in particular. Then Felix walked her home. "Goodnight, my love," he whispered to her. "I’ll see you at the altar!" "I’ll be there. Goodnight Felix." Izzy kissed his cheek. Felix walked home slowly. That would be the last time he ever ‘walked her home.’ From now on they would be walking home together – to the same place. It was a little scary, when Felix thought about it. Living together was a lot different than courting. He hoped that it would go smoothly. "I’m home!" he called as he walked in the door."Felix! Is that you? Can you come in here please?" called his mother. He followed her voice to the kitchen. His parents were seated at the table."Hey," he greeted them."Did you have a nice walk with Izzy?" she asked him, smiling."Yeah, I did.""How’s she holding up?" Alec asked."Good. She said she was a little nervous this morning, but she’s just excited now!""And you?""Still beaming!""We wanted to talk to you before all the hustle and bustle of tomorrow," his mother started."About what?" Felix asked, nervous."We just wanted to let you know how proud we are of you," Alec told him."You’ve become a wonderful young man Felix King – more that we ever thought you would. And Izzy is the best daughter-in-law we could have hoped for. Really, we couldn’t be happier. And we wanted to give you a really good start, you know, make sure that you’re going to be okay." Alec took Felix’s hand and pushed ’s into his palm. Felix’s eyes widened. He didn’t think he’d ever had this much money is his hands ever before. He knew his parents couldn’t really spare this much…and even if they could, he didn’t want them to give it to him."Mother, Father…please…this is too much…" "No, Felix! Please. Just put it away for safe keeping," his mother told him."But this is a lot of money father…you could buy yourself new farm equipment, and take mother on a trip…you don’t need to be giving this to me.""Nonsense. We want you to have it. Just think of it as security….just in case." "Honestly, Father I…" "Felix, that’s enough. It’s yours now. I’m telling you to keep it. Someday, it will be there for you to fall back on….and you’ll need it more then than we do now. So just put it away. We love you son." "I love you too," he said, still very unsure about accepting this money. But he knew his parents wouldn’t take it back, and it would be nice to have, just to put away and keep for emergencies. "Thank you," he said earnestly. "Now," his mother said, smiling. "I’ve pressed your suit…it’s hanging in your closet. You’ve done all your packing for the honeymoon? You have everything you need?" Felix nodded. "I’ll have all your things moved over to your new house by the time you get back, all right?" "Thanks mother." "Where are you taking her?" his father asked. "I’ve booked a little cottage at Bay Fortune for two weeks. It’s right on the water, a little beach of its own…it’s gorgeous. I know she’ll love it." "That sounds lovely." "It will be. I’m excited. And I’m exhausted. I’m going to go up to bed. Love you both. See you in the morning." Felix said before he walked up the stairs to his bedroom. Clive and Muriel were getting ready for bed when they heard Izzy come in. "We’re upstairs Izzy!" Muriel cried. She was in her nightgown, lying down in bed. Her feet were extremely sore and he back hurt. Clive sat at the end of the bed, massaging her swollen feet. "Oh! Muriel, are you all right!" Izzy said, rushing in and sitting on the bed beside her step-mother. "How’s baby?" she asked, gently touching Muriel’s billowed stomach. "I’m all right dear, just tired that’s all. Did you have a nice walk with Felix?" "Yes I did." "How is he?" "He’s great! I can’t believe how calm he is! I’m glad though, I was a little afraid he might not show up!" "He’ll show up…I told you, he loved y…" suddenly, Muriel’s face crumpled up in pain. For a second Izzy wasn’t sure what was going on and then it hit her. Muriel was in labour! "Oh! Oh my goodness! Father! Muriel’s going to have the baby! Quick….quick, run for the doctor," she directed him. "Oh! Muriel! Muriel are you okay?" After a few moments, Muriel relaxed a little. "I’m okay…Izz…has your father gone for the doctor?" "Yes. What can I do for you?" Izzy said, flustered. "Run downstairs and boil some water. And collect al the clean sheets from the linen closet and for Heavens sake – don’t panic! This is just a baby, not the end of the world!" Izzy did as she was told. When she was downstairs, she heard her father rush in with the doctor and go upstairs. She left the kettle to boil on the stove and ran after them. "Doctor…I’ve got all these clean sheets here if you need them, and I’m boiling some water downstairs." "That’s great Izzy, thank you. Please, when that water has boiled, would you bring it up to me? And then if I could get you to contact my nurse…Amanda Fletcher, please. Thank you. And then, if you and your father could wait downstairs…perhaps you could make him some tea." "Of course doctor. I’ll call your nurse right away."Izzy did so and the nurse was there within minutes. The water had boiled and Izzy took it up to the doctor. She leaned over the bed and kissed Muriel’s forehead. "I love you Muriel. Father and I will just be downstairs." Clive gave his wife a squeeze of the hand and then followed his daughter down the stairs. Izzy made a pot of tea and they sat in relative silence. It was late into the night when Izzy nodded off to sleep on the chesterfield in the sitting room. Clive smiled at his daughter and took a blanket over to the chesterfield to cover her and keep her warm. He was sure that HE wasn’t going to get any sleep… At Green Gables, Rilla sat in her bedroom thinking of Kenneth, the same way, in fact, that her mother had sat there once, thinking of her father. She sighed as she pulled out his letter. She would respond, now that the lights were out and she was really alone. She sat at her desk and pulled out some paper." To My Kenneth," she wrote. She had thought that it would be difficult to write him a letter, but the words just seemed to flow out of her pen. When she was done, she wiped the stray tears from her eyes and smiled. It had been a cleansing experience writing to him. She had felt so cluttered and disconnected and writing to him had brought him closer to her again. She tucked the letter into and envelope and got into bed. But not with out a little prayer for his safety first. Felix didn’t remember falling asleep that night, but he knew that he had slept more soundly than ever before. It was odd, he thought. One would think that you wouldn’t sleep much the night before your wedding! But he had and it was quite late in the morning when he waltzed down the stairs. "Good morning? How does the groom feel after his nice long sleep?" Cecily asked. "Great!" he said, stretching. "All ready?" "All ready!" "Good! I’m sure Izzy’s been up for hours already!" Cecily and Felix laughed. But in fact, Izzy too was still sound asleep, as was the little bundle lying in the cradle upstairs. Izzy woke, confused as to where she was, and then she jumped up. Muriel! The baby! She ran upstairs and into her parents bedroom. Her father stood over the cradle, smiling gently. Muriel looked to be asleep in the bed. Izzy entered quietly. "Clive," she mumbled. "Bring the baby to Izzy." Izzy smiled. Her father picked up the sleeping child and lay it in Izzy’s arms. Muriel sat up in bed and Izzy carried the child with her as she sat down beside Muriel. "We’d like you to meet you new sister," Muriel said quietly. "We’ve called her Jessica." A tear rolled down Izzy’s cheek. "She’s perfect," she whispered as she looked down at the sleeping baby. "How are you Muriel?" "I’m fine. How’s the bride?" Izzy smiled. "I’m all right. I’m better now. Look at her! She’s beautiful!" "She is, isn’t she?" said Clive. "She looks a lot like you did Izzy." "Really?" "Yes." "I’m sorry she chose to come on your wedding day, Izzy!" "Oh! Don’t be! This makes it all the more beautiful." Somehow, the day progressed and Izzy came to be dressing for her wedding. Cecily had come over to help her dress and they would go to the cliff at Dalvay together. "I’m so excited!" Izzy exclaimed. "I can’t believe I’m about to get married!" Cecily turned around and embraced her friend. "Neither can I!" Izzy walked to the mirror, all dressed, hair done and veil on, and turned around. "Well," she asked her friend, "How do I look?" Cecily’s eyes were wide. "You look…amazing! The most perfect bride!" Izzy laughed. "That’s what everyone says. Now, Muriel asked me to go in and see her when I’d finished dressing…have you seen the baby?" Cecily shook her head. "Then come along. She’s with Muriel." Cecily followed Izzy into Muriel’s room, where mother and baby were enjoying some time together on the bed. "I’m ready," Izzy announced as she walked in. "Oh Izzy!" breathed Muriel! "My dear, you are simply stunning! I’m sorry I couldn’t help you dress – I’m just so weak…" "I understand Muriel," Izzy said, smiling. "Don’t apologize! And this, Cecily, is my new baby sister, Jessica. Isn’t she adorable?" Izzy gushed. Cecily laughed as the baby grabbed on to one of her fingers. "She’s beautiful!" "I see you’re dressed and ready too Cecily. You look lovely!" "Thank you." "Well…Izzy, I’ll go and find your father," Cecily offered. "We don’t want to be late!" "Thanks Cess!" Cecily smiled as she went off the find Clive Pettibone. "Mr. Pettibone, Izzy’s ready. She’s upstairs with Mrs. Pettibone." "Thank you Cecily." Clive Pettibone followed Cecily King as they walked back into the house and up to the bedroom where Muriel and Izzy were sitting together with baby Jessica. Continuing On... "Wow," Clive said quietly as he looked at his eldest daughter, dressed in her bridal whites. "Do you like it?" Izzy said as she turned around so he could see the dress. "You look beautiful," he whispered. "Thank you father." "Well," Clive said breezily, trying to inconspicuously wipe away the tears that had escaped his eyes. "Are you ready to go Iz?" "As ready as I’ll ever be!" "Let’s lets get going!" Izzy, Cecily, and Clive were walking out of the house when a carriage drove up to the house and out stepped none other than Lillian Heppworth. "Aunt Lillian!" Izzy exclaimed running towards her aunt. "I didn’t think you were going to be able to make it! Oh Aunt Lillian, this is wonderful!" "What? You thought I would miss the wedding of my favorite niece? Oh course not my dear! And I’ve brought you something…I’ll give it to you after the wedding, before you leave." "All right. Aunt Lillian – Muriel had the baby last night. It’s a girl. And do you know what they named her? Jessica." Lillian looked to Clive, honestly touched. "What a wonderful gesture!" she exclaimed. "A beautiful name put to good use! Is Muriel in the house? Do you think I’d mind if I went up to visit her for just a moment? I imagine she won’t be at the wedding in her condition?" Izzy looked a little saddened by this. "No…no she won’t. I’m sure she’d like it if you ran up to see her!" "Alright then dear, run along now – you don’t want to be late! But be sure not to start before I get there!" Izzy laughed. "We won’t – I promise!" Izzy got in the carriage and drove down the lane that would take her to her wedding. Lillian let herself into the house and found her way to Muriel "Miss Heppworth! We didn’t think you’d make it! Izzy said…" "Never mind what Izzy said! I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. And congratulations! What a beautiful baby Muriel." "Thank you," she said with sparkling eyes. "Have Izzy and Clive left with Cecily King?" "Yes, they left a few moments ago." "I’m so sorry about missing Izzy’s wedding. But Clive has insisted that I…but you know what? Forget about Clive Pettibone! I’m not going to miss my step-daughters wedding! Do you think you could help me down the stairs? And I suppose you have a carriage?" "Why, yes. Yes, of course I’ll help you. It would mean so much to Isolde I’m sure." "Yes, it would. Miss Heppworth…my outfit is in that closet there…yes, the green one. Will you help me?" "Of course." Lillian Heppworth helped Muriel dress and get down the stairs (of course, baby Jessica came too!). They got into the carriage and went off to the cliffs at Dalvay. Izzy and Clive were standing around a corner, out of view of the altar when Lillian and Muriel arrived. Lillian ran over and tapped Clive on the shoulder and motioned for him to follow her. Izzy didn’t even notice his absence. "Muriel! You’re supposed to be in bed…" "I know Clive….but I just couldn’t miss this!" Clive smiled, picked Muriel up, the baby in her arms, and carried her to her seat in the front row. Then he walked back to Izzy, after waving the go-ahead to the quartet Izzy had hired. They started to play the music. Cecily turned to her friend. "Here we go," she whispered before she stepped out down the aisle. She winked at Felix as she passed him…he looked perfectly calm! Felix smiled at his sister. He just wanted to see Izzy come around that corner. The days was beautiful, sunny and warm. Just as Izzy had predicted, the cliff was covered in wildflowers. The ocean quietly lapped at the sand and every wave glistened in the sunlight. The music changed and Izzy began to walk towards him. She was beautiful, absolutely beautiful. The light breeze fluttered her dress as she walked towards him. Through her veil he could see her smiling at him. To Felix, it seemed like forever before she, on her father’s arm, reached him. It was asked, "Who gives this woman to this man in holy matrimony?" To which Clive quietly and a little sadly responding, "I do." Clive lifted her veil enough to kiss her cheek. She smiled at him and said, "I love you father." "I love you too Izzy," he told her before he place her hand, in Felix’s open and waiting one. Together they walked the rest of the way up to the aisle and to the alter. "Hi," Izzy whispered as they turned to face each other. Felix laughed under his breath. "Hi," he whispered back. For a moment, Izzy was unsure of reality, unsure that she was actually standing there in her wedding gown. She felt her knees go soft beneath her and was forced to use all her might just to stay standing. Felix’s eyes bore deep into hers and without words he knew and understood Izzy’s thoughts. His lips parted in a small smile. That smiled shot strength back into her shaking legs and she looked up with confidence. What seemed to Izzy and Felix to be only a few seconds had really spanned a few minutes. And for better or for worse, the minister announced them as husband and wife. Felix took a step towards her and tried to lift her veil…but his shaking hands left him fumbling. "What is this…groom-proof?" he joked. Izzy and the guests laughed. Finally, he managed to get it passed her face. His hand caressed her cheek. "I love you," he whispered before he bent down and kissed her. He leaned his forehead against her as they smiled, their eyes still closed, savoring the moment. "We did it!" Izzy whispered excitedly. "We really did it." "We really did. Shall we?" he asked her, holding out his hand. Izzy wiped away a few tears from her eyes and she took his hand as they walked quickly down the aisle and around the corner, out of the sight of the guests. Once they were alone, Felix gathered her in his arms and pulled her to him. "We’re MARRIED Felix! We actually did it!" Izzy squealed. "You look beautiful," Felix told her softly, stoking her cheek. "Thank you, handsome!" she laughed. "Are you ready to party?" Felix said, giving her a wink. They ran out to the motorcar that was waiting to take them the short distance to the hotel. With such a small wedding, Simon’s generosity in giving them use of the hotel for the reception, and the gift of the house, Izzy had a large bundle of money left in the account her mother had left her. She had put most of it away, but decided that it would be nice to have a motorcar and driver to take them from the wedding to the hotel and finally from the hotel to wherever Felix’s mystery honeymoon destination was. Felix helped Izzy into the automobile and then got in after her. The both turned around and waved at the congregation of wedding guests. Then the motorcar drove away, the tickling and crashing of bells and cans clanking behind it. Felix put her arm around her as they drove and she snuggled into his shoulder. Simon Tremain had quickly gone to the hotel after the ceremony to make sure everything was perfect for the couple before they arrived. He had even set aside a room for them where they could wait alone for all the guests to arrive before they entered the dining room. He was waiting for them when they arrived. Felix got out of the motorcar and offered his hand to Izzy. "Mrs. King," he said as he helped her out of the automobile. "Thank you!" she smiled. "Felix! Izzy!" Mr. Tremain called out as they approached the front door. ‘Simon," Felix greeted him, shaking his hand. "Congratulations!" he told them both after kissing Izzy’s cheek. "Now, none of your guests have arrived yet…I’ve arranged a room upstairs where you two can wait for them all to arrive. Someone will come to fetch you when it’s time. Now go ahead…Felix, you know the room!" he said, smiling at Felix. They thanked Mr. Tremain and Felix led Izzy up the stairs to the Blue Room, usually occupied by honeymooners. Felix opened the door and held it open for Izzy, who stepped inside, looked around and went to the window. "It’s odd up here," she told him as he shut the door behind them. "I’ve never been up here before…not really anyway. It’s beautiful out this window. Look at the water." "It IS beautiful," Felix said as he walked over and put his arms around her waist. "But I’d rather look at what I’ve got right here in my arms." Izzy sighed happily and turned to face him, still in the circle of his arms. "I can’t believe that we’re actually MARRIED," she told him. "After everything….to be standing here with you now is incredible. I love you Felix." "And I love you," he whispered before he kissed her soundly. There was a knock on the door. "We’ll pick this up later," he told her before he went to answer it. It was Mr. Tremain. "I apologize…everything is ready and guests are here. It’s time for you two to make your entrance!" Felix turned back to Izzy and held out his hand. She walked over and they followed Mr. Tremain down the stairs. They waited outside the double doors as Simon introduced them. When they heard their names, Felix reached out and opened the door. Izzy laughed as they walked, looking around at the smiling faces and congratulatory cheers. The entire evening was fairytale perfect, and all too soon (and not soon enough all at the same time) it was over and it was time for Felix and Izzy to leave. Izzy ran up to the room, followed by Cecily, Lillian and Muriel, to change into her going away outfit. As she dressed in the beautiful, classy mauve outfit she and Muriel had created, she began to get very excited. She turned to the other women once she was ready. "I have to admit to being a little frightened. This whole ‘new life’ thing is a little scary." Muriel and Lillian laughed. "Izzy, darling, you will be just fine. Have some faith!" Lillian told her kindly. "Well," she said, giving herself one more once-over in the mirror. "I think I’m ready!" Cecily handed her the throw-away bouquet. "Let’s go!" Felix was waiting for her at the top of the stairs. The other women joined the guests at the bottom. Izzy turned her back and threw the bouquet over the handrail and Cecily King caught it. Izzy turned back around and winked at her friend, who winked back. "Ready?" she said to Felix. "Ready," he confirmed. They ducked as they ran passed the laughing guests throwing rice and out to the motorcar. Clive, Muriel, Alec, Janet, Morgan, Arthur, Felicity, Gus, Cecily and Daniel were all waiting out there to say good bye. Everyone was teary – even the men, and after a few moments of hugs and kisses and goodbyes it was really time to leave. Izzy stood in front of her father. "I love you Father," she told him, her lips quivering. "I love you too, Izzy," he smiled bravely at her. "Have a wonderful time!" "We will," she said."Bye Iz, you look beautiful!" Arthur told her "See you when you get back," said Morgan "All right! Goodbye!" she said, kissing them all again. "Well, my boy," Alec said to his son as he embraced him. "I wish you all the luck in the world." "I know you do Father. Thank you." "Goodbye Felix! Stop in at Green Gables when you get back!" Felicity reminded him. "Take care," said Gus. "See you later Felix!" Daniel said with a toothy grin. Felix ruffled his hair. "See you Daniel." "Take care of her," Cecily warned him. "You know I will Cess." "I know. Love you Felix." "Love you too." He turned to his mother, her eyes awash with tears, "Goodbye mother. Thank you for everything. I love you so much," he opened his arms to her. "I’m just not ready to let you go!" she told him. "You grew up on me Felix! Oh, I guess it would have happened someday. Be careful alright. I love you, my son." He kissed his mothers cheek and then reached out and took Izzy’s hand. "See you all when we get back!" he cried as they stepped into the motorcar. Felicity looked around. They would all have to go somewhere. But Muriel couldn’t be the hostess, she’s just had a baby! And Janet certainly wasn’t in the right place to be cooking dinner for all of them. "Why don’t you all come over to Green Gables?" she suggested. "I’ll take care of dinner tonight." Everyone agreed. Izzy and Felix sat in relative silence the entire ride into Bay Fortune. Izzy still had no idea where they were going. When they arrived at the little summer cottage he had rented her eyes widened. ‘Felix! This is beautiful! How in the world…" "You," he said with a kiss, "stay put. Don’t move from this very spot!" He helped the driver carry their bags inside. From Izzy’s spot, she couldn’t even peak inside the little place. "Felix! What is going on?" she asked him. He gave her no answer, just that famous lop-sided smile. Felix thanked the driver, tipped him and watched him drive down the long lane and out of sight. Then he turned to Izzy. He walked over to her and in one quick motion picked her up in his arms. Izzy laughed. "What are you doing?" she asked him softly. "Why, carrying you over the threshold of course!" he told her. "Oh!" Once inside he set her down on her feet. "Well? What do you think?" he asked her, seeking her approval. She walked around the room. "What do I think? I think it’s magnificent! And you know what else I think?" she asked, moving closer to him. "I think you are the most wonderful man in the entire world. And I love you." She leaned in and kissed him. "I’ve never seen you look more beautiful then you did when you came down that aisle today," he whispered, looking at her in awe. "I couldn’t even believe how beautiful you were…how beautiful you ARE." "Doesn’t this all just seem like a beautiful dream to you?" she asked him. He shook his head. "No," he whispered, kissing her hand. "It’s a new beginning." And a new beginning it was – for everyone; for Clive and Muriel and the new Jessica Pettibone; for Felicity, Gus and their family with the deaf school; for Rilla Ford, a new life and a new purpose; and for Felix and Izzy King…well, we all know how that story turns out.
